Verify whether your passport qualifies for the unilateral 15-day / 30-day visa-free entry (expanded to citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, etc.) or the 144-Hour Transit Without Visa (TWOV). Ensure your physical passport has at least 6 months validity from entry date and 2 blank visa pages.
The China Arrival Checklist
12 critical steps before and after wheels down. Do not board your flight without completing the first eight.
Pre-Departure: 7 to 30 Days Before Takeoff
Crucial: Setting up these accounts inside mainland China is vastly more difficult because Google Play, foreign verification SMS, and app stores face strict firewall barriers.
Download official Alipay (支付宝) from the App Store or Google Play. Complete identity verification with your international passport number. Bind at least two credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex). Transactions under ¥200 CNY (~$28 USD) incur 0% platform fee.
Install WeChat (微信) and complete phone registration. If WeChat prompts for "Friend Verification", ask a trusted friend or your fixer who has had an active WeChat account for 6+ months to scan your QR code. Navigate to Me > Services > Wallet and link an international card as your secondary payment lifeline.
Purchase a roaming travel eSIM (such as Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, or 3HK). Roaming international eSIM data routes through external IP gateways (Hong Kong/Singapore), providing instant, unrestricted access to Google Maps, WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack, and Instagram the exact second your plane wheels touch down at Beijing Capital or Shanghai Pudong.
Do not rely on a single service. Install at least two separate, obfuscated network bypass tools across all your devices (Mac/Windows laptop and phone). Ensure client apps are fully updated and test connectivity prior to international departure.
Download the official Railway 12306 (中国铁路12306) app. Switch language to English and register using your passport details. Automated identity verification takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 24 hours. Once verified, you can book high-speed rail tickets directly with foreign cards with zero third-party agency markups.
Never rely on Google Maps in China: it suffers from an uncalibrated 500-meter coordinate offset caused by the Chinese national GCJ-02 encryption datum. If using an iPhone, Apple Maps automatically switches to AutoNavi data with fluent English street names and subway routing. Android users should download Amap (高德地图).
Install Pleco (the gold standard offline dictionary with handwriting recognition and stroke definitions) and DeepL. Download offline camera OCR dictionaries so you can decipher handwritten menus, transit notices, and QR payment instructions without active internet.
Ground Zero: First 72 Hours in China
Before exiting customs, locate an ATM operated by Bank of China (BOC), ICBC, or China Construction Bank. Withdraw ¥300 to ¥600 RMB ($40–$85 USD). Ask the airport currency exchange or convenience store to break large ¥100 bills into ¥10, ¥20, and ¥50 notes. By Chinese law, merchants must accept RMB cash.
Under Article 39 of the PRC Exit and Entry Administration Law, all foreign visitors must be registered with the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) within 24 hours of arrival.
- Hotels: Licensed hotels submit this automatically when scanning your passport. Keep your check-in slip.
- Private Rentals / Airbnbs / Coliving: You must register online via the city's official PSB WeChat mini-program (e.g. Shanghai Self-Declaration) or accompany your landlord to the local police station (派出所) with lease and passport.
While roaming eSIMs provide immediate internet, living long-term in China requires a domestic +86 telephone number to unlock Meituan (food delivery/groceries), Taobao, local Wi-Fi verification SMS, and Didi driver calls. Visit a primary corporate hall (自营营业厅) of China Telecom (中国电信) or China Unicom (中国联通) with your physical passport and ask for a no-contract prepaid plan (预付费套餐, ~¥39–¥59/mo for 30–50 GB).
Open Alipay and tap Transport (出行) at the top of the home screen. Select your current city (Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, etc.) to activate the subway and bus transit pass. Scan your phone directly at the turnstiles with zero ticket line queues. Open the integrated Didi (滴滴) mini-program inside Alipay for English ride-hailing with automatic card billing.
Let Villanelle architect your arrival, manage police registration, organize direct English-speaking tour guides, or design high-ticket medical & dental clinic routing.
